To get the 'Spanish Two Stroke' Thread up and running attached is a photograph of two Montesa Brio 110 125cc racers and Stan Rainers BSA Bantam racer. It looks as if the photograph was taken at Silverstone in the early 1960s. I understand that Montesa Brio 110's were imported by Jim Bounds of Watford but he found it difficult to sell them as road bikes, so he converted them for road racing. In the 1950s the only proper 125cc production racer available was the MV Agusta which was more expensive than a new 500cc Manx Norton. Montesa Motorcycles (GB) also imported some 125cc Grand Prix production racers but they were expensive and outside most peoples price range. Regards Butty Bach

According to Glass's Check Books, the Cota 49 was imported from November 1972, followed by the Cota 123, Cappra VR, and Cota 247 in April 1973. Then the Cota 172 in February 1975. The GP machines wouldn't have made it into the pages of Glass's. Importing Spanish bikes couldn't have been particularly easy while Franco's isolationist policies were in place ... though no doubt easier than exporting to Spain would have been!

Hi 1951superlux Further to my earlier post. Attached is an extract from an article on the 'classic50racingclub.co.uk' website about Jim Bound's daughter Barbara. It confirms that he was Montesa Motors UK. Many years ago a relative of Jim Bound attended our local BTSC monthly section meetings. He said that Jim raced a heavily modified Villiers 10D engined special in the 125cc class ( presumably in the early to mid 1950s ) but the internals were not strong enough and it blew up. What I wrote before was rubbish ... I hadn't looked back far enough. Montesa wasn't in the issue that purports to list everything from 1961-68 even though they were still on the UK market in 1965! There's a summary in Stone & Cox: The reason it says 'details are not to hand...' for 1966 was that was when it all changed and a new company Montesa Concessionaires (Northern) Ltd was set up to handle imports.

Another piece of information has come to light when I was searching a 'Vintage Kart Racing' website. In July 1960 'Montesa Motorcycles GB Ltd' AKA Jim Bounds of Watford was offering 125cc Montesa engines for Kart Racing. Unfortunately there are no pictures but from the power output of 15.5 bhp they could be tuned Brio 110 engines or possibly the later single exhaust Sportsman engine. Butty Bach
