Lots of things I don't know about the engine fitted to my Plover of 1965 vintage, like what do the three wire colours coming from generator casing do? What is correct carburretor? What is the strange shaped flimsy bracket mounted on the other bracket that carries the two Dzus fasteners for side panels? How much oil does clutch side take, and is short tube the level marker? Etc. Etc..

Hi d7er The first thing is to establish exactly which model you have. Is it the Plover Model 95 with the spine frame or the Model 96 which uses the much more substantial James Captain frame. Both bikes are identical to the James Cadet M15 and M16 versions other than the colour and the name badge. The electrics are Wipac and attached is a wiring diagram for the M16 / Model 96 which has battery lighting. I also have two wiring diagrams for the M15 /Model 95 one for direct lighting and one for battery lighting. The carburettor should be an Amal Monobloc 375/37. It is slightly different to other Monobloc carburettors as the emulsion tube is cut at an angle like the two stroke versions of the later Concentric Mk1. It also has a rod operated air slide. The settings are: Model: Concentric 375/37 Internal Bore: 13/16" Main Jet: 110 cc Pilot Jet: 25 cc Throttle Valve: 3½ Cut-Away. Throttle Needle: B Throttle Needle Position: 2 Groove from top. Needle Jet: 0.105" If you are used to D7 Bantams it is very similar to the D7/DL carburettor but has a slightly smaller internal bore. With regard to engine lubrication I have a Workshop manual for the earlier Cadet L15/A which uses the same or very similar AMC 150 engine. It states there is a combined filler plug and dipstick on the top of the gearbox and the primary chaincase has a rubber filler and inspection plug on the side of the chaincase. The oil volume is given as approximately 22 fluid ounces ( 625 ml ) for both. The Gearbox / Primary drive oil should be SAE30 grade. I have recently found a technical description of the AMC 150 engine which states the gearbox oil capacity is 1.1 Pints ( 22 fluid ounces or 625 ml ) and the chaincase capacity is 0.1 pints ( 2 fluid ounces or 57 ml ). 2 fluid ounces is also quoted in the Handbook for the James Scooter which uses a basically similar AMC 150 engine so it looks as if the information in the James Cadet L15/A manual is incorrect. Regards Butty Bach
