I was digging through a box of parts that came with my ML James and came across these clutch plates. I have no idea what they might be for so I am asking you for your insight and advise. The steel plates measure 3-7/8 od, 1-5/8 id. Friction 3-7/8 od 1-5/8 to the bottom of the splines and 1-5/16 to the top of the splines.

Hi John The clutch plates look similar to BSA Bantam clutch plates and are the same diameter at 3⅞". The BSA Bantam was based on the DKW RT125 so they could be DKW parts or the could be Harley Davidson Hummer parts as the Hummer was also a DKW RT125 clone. I had a look on a Harley Hummer spares website and whilst the modern clutch plates that they sell look a bit different with modern bonded linings yours appear to be an early type with cork inserts. Attached is a photo of some old worn mid 1960s BSA Bantam clutch plates for comparison. Regards Butty Bach.

In that case, could they also belong to one of the other RT125 clones, like the Minsk? I think there were several other variations made in the USSR & Poland.

Thank you for your information. If I ever come across someone who has an early BSA or Hummer I will pass them along. Cheers John in Texas

Hi John
The clutch plates will not fit a BSA Bantam. The spline profile that fits onto the clutch hub is different. The modern replacement clutch friction plates on the Harley Hummer spares website appear to have the same spline profile as your cork insert friction plates. So I am fairly confident that they are Harley Hummer parts, but I could be wrong.

Well, I don't know anyone with a Harly Hummer, but I will ask around. I went to the Texas Fandango over the weekend. It is a AMCA sponsored show and swap meet in Fredericksburg Texas. It is for the most part a Harley thing but, you never can tell what will show up. I found a pair of wheels that appear to be off of a James ML for $10 each. Even if they aren't correct just the adjusters were well worth the expense. And the best thing was a guy showed up with a restored ML125 James. I took a lot of pictures to use as a reference. Cheers John in Texas

Hi John
Had a look at the Texas Fandango event on the web and it looks a really good event. We have the Stafford Classic Motorcycle Show next weekend but its not one of my favourite events. Over the last few years the older British bikes and spares are disappearing and being replaced by 1960s on Japanese and European machines which are not my area of interest, I am still back in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
I am amazed at the amount of lightweight British motorcycle parts that you find in the USA. I thought most of our exports to the USA were heavyweight singles and twins.

Regards Butty Bach Well to be honest the Fandango was pretty much all Harley. Both in the show and in the swap meet. As for all the bikes exported to the US from the UK, I think a lot of them have been re-imported back to the UK.
