Dealing with older motorcycles can be a bit of a problem. While trying to dismantle the coils on my 46 James with a 9D engine nothing would come apart. The mounting screws were almost all seized and my efforts to get the screws out I managed trashed them. Took the whole backing plate to a friend who has a mill, and we were able to remove the screw heads and get the coils off. In my efforts to remove what was left of the screws they all came out save one in the ignition coil mount. It has 3024 cast into it. I have sent an inquiry to Villers Services to see if they might have one but as of today, I haven't heard back. I could not find any part numbers for either of the mounts in the parts catalog that I have but couldn't find any. Would anyone have this item that they are willing to part with? Thank you for any help you can give me.

Could you post a photograph of the part you require. It's VMCC Founders Day Autojumble on 21st July which is one of the largest Autojumbles and a lot of parts for older machines are for sale. If I know exactly what I am looking for I may be able to find one. I believe this particular flywheel magneto is only used on the VIII D and 9D engines. It's rather different to the one used on the later 10D and its larger brother the 6E.

Had some work done on my right knee so running out to my workshop didn't happen. Di get out there earlier today and took pictures of the mount and the whole thing. I'm thinking that someone having just the mounts is a slim to none shot but there might be a whole assembly. So, I took a picture of the backside of the mounting plate with the patent numbers on it. With the ignition and lighting coils in place you wouldn't be able to see the numbers on the inside of the plate. I took pictures of that too. Thanks for any help you can give me with this project.

I would describe the parts you need as 'Ignition Coil Pole Shoes'. My 1930s Villiers Spare Parts book describes them as 'Laminated Cheeks' I will have a good look around at VMCC Founders Day next Sunday and see if anything turns up. Unfortunately you do not see a lot of Villiers parts at Autojumbles other than one regular who specialises in the 250cc 31A to 37A engines and the competition parts that were manufactured for them for Trials and Scrambles.
It's normally down to grubbing around in boxes of rusty and oily parts to find the bits I need. The bonus is that they are a normally lot cheaper than the shiny bits on display. Autojumble Rule No1: Never tell the vendor what the part is or what it fits, until you have the part in your hand and he has the money in his. But there are exceptions, like the vendor who wanted a lot of money for a 1930s Albion four speed gearbox. Problem was that it was three forward speeds and one reverse speed, probably off a small three wheeled industrial truck that was used to transport parts around a large factory. So it was worth a lot less than he was asking.

I have been working the ML James underground on this side of the pond. In the faint hope of scoring the part I need. I have the parts book for the 9D engine, and it doesn't show the part I need. Sent an Email to Villers Specialties like I said, so far all I got was crickets. There was a YouTube video from a guy in Tennessee who showed all sorts of parts for the ML's and I contacted him about a year ago, he said he would contact me back as soon as he got out to his shop, and I never heard back from him. Must be a long walk to his shop. Digging into boxes at swap meet or auto jumbles can be very rewarding if you don't mind getting dirty. If you do mind getting dirty you have the wrong hobby. Well the ML underground has come through. One of them (there are only a few of us) has an extra set of coil pole shoes. So that problem is resolved. Thanks to all. Norton John aka John in Texas

Dave Booth in Indiana had the coil mount, and I had a extra center stand. So, we are helping each other with our projects. Dave has a betted rear fender that Linley in Nova Scotia needed. The James underground is working to get a few more of the ML's back up and running. Cheers John
