Hello all, I'm new to all things James. Picked up what I'm told is a 1947 ML125 a few weeks ago. I have down loaded the parts book and have books for the 9D Villers engine on order. I would like to get a shop book if such a thing exists. I do have the CD from Simply Wizard on order which may answer a lot of my questions. I was missing 1 of the rear axle nuts and thought that it was 1/2-26 cei, but using a thread gauge it is 1/2-24 American. Any reason why? I am sure I will have more silly questions. Hi Norton John
You may find that the James manual does not have all the information that you need for the Villiers 9D engine, gearbox and carburettor fitted in your 1947 James ML. If you need any additional information on the engine / gearbox I can either post it on the forum or 'e' mail it to you.

Butty, There is no such thing as having too much information. Right now I'm at a bit of a standstill waiting for the books from Villers. I damaged the rear axle trying to chase what I thought was a 26tpi. I should have measured first! I also need to know how the spacers are arranged and what thickness they are for the rear wheel and brake. When I tightened up the rear axle nuts the rear wheel locks up, so there is an issue there. I'm also missing the rear wheel adjusters. I think the cap piece on the end of the frame is the same as the one on my 53 BSA C11. Draganfly shows them. And I can make the adjuster part welding a 1/4" threaded rod to a thick washer.

I got the nuts I needed from British Tool and Fastener here in the states. I ordered an American size 1/2-24 tap and die which is a perfect fit. So those issues are resolved. Again, thanks for your help. Nortonjohn

Went to a motorcycle swap meet over the weekend. Sold some parts and didn't buy anything which is a plus. While visiting a gentleman he mentioned that a local guy (in Oklahoma) who he knows is into James motorcycles. He didn't have the man's number. But I asked around and got his sons number who said he would give the man my number. So, I'm hopeful this will work into something. We will see.

What size is the drive chain on my 47 ML125 James? All I can find is the pitch (1/2") and nothing else. Does anyone know where I might find the shifter gate for this model along with the shifter knob?

Nortonjohn My neighbor's son asked me to help him with his Kreidler moped. (What have I gotten myself into) He is going to do yard work for me in exchange for the help. I measured his drive chain, and it looks like the chain I need for my James is a 415. So that mystery is solved. How long does it take for Simply Wizard to ship his CD? Again, thanks Nortonjohn

Sorry about not responding to you request for the Villiers 9D manual. I have not been online for a couple of weeks because I was busy rebuilding my 1929 Ariel Model E engine for a rally. I have uploaded the manual on my sky drive and will send you via an 'e' mail attachment.
With regard to your final drive chain problem. Francis Barnett were very helpful as they quote the Reynold chain reference for their models. The Snipe J48 and Merlin 51 both use the Villiers 9D engine so the James rear chain size should be the same.
The correct chain size should be Reynolds 110 044. This chain is ½" pitch × 3/16". Roller diameter: 0.335", Width between inner side plates: 0.205". The sprocket tooth thickness should be: 0.189" to suit the chain.
The ½" pitch chains come is several roller diameters and if they are not correct for the sprocket the chain can trip over the sprocket teeth and causes excessive noise and wear. To make certain the chain fits correctly strip down one chain link to components and check that the chain roller fits snuggly in the bottom of the sprocket tooth.
If you speak to your chain supplier and give him the above information he should be able to help you. There are still some new old stock Reynold chains available on the internet. Always order a couple more links than you think you need, its easy to shorten a chain but lengthening it and having additional split links just increases the chances of a chain failure.

Thank you for getting back to me. I just got the Simply Wizard CD just moments ago. Found out the Mr. Abrahams had passed some time ago. My thanks to his wife for sending it on to me. I would love to see pictures of your Ariel. I will measure what I have sprocket wise and see how it comes out. Thinking it might be a 415 chain but we will see. But that will have to wait until tomorrow. I'm working on making a new rear axle and hope to have it done tomorrow.

Hi Norton John I have done a bit of checking because I did not have the sizes of the 415 chain. I found the information on the 'Wemoto' website. The 415 chain is the same dimensions as the old Coventry 112 045 chain: pitch ½", roller diameter 0.305", width between inner plates 0.192". Wemoto show it as metric dimensions. The 110 044 Reynold Mk10 chain used on the James is: pitch ½", roller diameter 0.335", width between inner plates 0.205". So the 415 chain has smaller diameter rollers and is slightly narrower. It will fit but it is far from ideal. It would be much better to get the correct sized chain.
Attached are a couple of photographs of my 1929 Model E Black Ariel taken at a run last year. Since then it has had a top end engine rebuild because the valve guides were worn out. It now has had new valves, valve guides and valve springs fitted. I just need to sort out problems with the carburation and it will be ready for an Ariel Rally in mid June.
